Honey bees mysterious disappearance – What does it means for mankind?

So often we take for granted those things surrounding us in our daily lives. We give little thought as to how plant life and crops grow, simplistically believing it all just happens miraculously. Did you know honey bees are responsible for the pollination of one third of the fruits and vegetables we eat. This is a staggering amount of work by these small insects. However, one third of their population died off in 2012. Not only that, but the loss of upwards of fifteen billion dollars in income and a change of dietary habits is a real life future scenario.

Think about this. When was the last time you saw a honey bee? Up until a few years ago, they moved from plant to plant on my deck during the warm months of the year. They have been replaced by Bumble bees in smaller numbers which have taken on a greater role in pollination. Unfortunately, honey bees continue to disappear at an extremely alarming rate. Colony Collapse Disorder is the term coined for the mysterious absence of these vitally important insects.

But what is causing their demise? That question has haunted scientists for some time now. A variety of causes are thought to be culprits. Some believe there is evidence of a primary suspect responsible for their rapidly disappearing numbers. Insecticides.

To say we are facing a disastrous dilemma is not unfounded. So what can we do to make a difference? How can we change things for bees in their quest for survival? There are answers if we bother to take the time. It is up to each one of us to make a difference. It maybe our continued existence as a species depends on it.
